About:
Project Embrace™ challenges the narrow perception of beautiful hair. We inspire girls and young women to love, embrace and celebrate everything about themselves including their own hair and reject the narrow ideals of beautiful hair.
Going Natural in these times can be an emotional journey. It is not as simple as deciding to change your hairstyle. It is laden with all sorts of assumptions, most of which are negative.
For many women the support they need does not come from their direct environment, and it is not always easy to ignore the ignorant comments that come sometimes from friends and family.
Also as a mother, it may be your desire to maintain your daughter's hair in its natural state. This too is not always easy given how easily influenced young girls are with images they are exposed to. A lot of mothers have come to me desperate that their young children want to straighten their hair.
This blog is here to encourage you and provide you with information that you need. You will be faced with a barrage of negative comments from people around you, because unfortunately there are still many people out there who think Afro hair is plain ugly and should not be given the time of day. They will not understand why you have decided to expose your Afro textured hair and will most of the time let you know in no uncertain terms.
Having been natural for 14 years I have encountered all kinds of comments, and through experience have learnt how to handle the negative and embrace the positive. Through trial and error I have found what works for my hair and what doesn't.
So when you need the support to hold on to your decisions, when you need to hear the words to keep you on track, you natural hair mentor, Lekia Lée, will be there to hold you hand.
Your hair is your crowning glory, let me help you love it, respect it and nurture it.
